SS 304 vs SS 202 Wire Shelving: Which Grade Should You Buy?
| 06 Nov 2026
In short: For kitchens, cold rooms, food and pharma storage, or any damp and salty place, choose SS 304. SS 202 can work for dry indoor storage where budget matters most. The two grades look identical, so always ask for the grade in writing on the quotation and invoice, and ask for a mill test certificate. Rackwell Shelving, a wire shelving manufacturer in Kanpur, quotes both grades and states the grade on every quotation.
Why do buyers keep asking about SS 304 vs SS 202?
Most buyers meet this question when two quotations for the same rack differ by thousands of rupees. Both say "stainless steel". Both shine. Both come in the same size. The cheaper one is usually SS 202 (or SS 201), and the dearer one is SS 304. At Rackwell Shelving we get this question almost every week, so this guide answers it in plain words.
What is the real difference between SS 304 and SS 202?
The difference is inside the metal. Stainless steel resists rust because of chromium, and 304 also carries a good amount of nickel. SS 202 replaces much of that nickel with manganese, which makes it cheaper but less resistant to rust when it stays wet or meets salt, chlorine or acids.
- Typical nickel content: SS 304 about 8 to 10.5%; SS 202 about 4 to 6%; SS 201 about 3.5 to 5.5%.
- Manganese: Low in SS 304; higher in SS 202 / SS 201 (it replaces nickel).
- Rust resistance: SS 304 is better and suited to wet, humid and food areas. SS 202 / SS 201 is lower and can show rust spots in wet or salty use.
- Price: SS 304 is higher; SS 202 / SS 201 is lower.
- Best for: SS 304 for kitchens, cold rooms, food, pharma, labs and coastal sites. SS 202 / SS 201 for dry indoor storage, godowns, offices and budget jobs.
Can you tell SS 304 from SS 202 by looking at it?
No. Once polished, the two grades look the same to the eye. Even the common magnet test is not reliable, because both grades can become slightly magnetic after the wire is bent and welded. This is why buyers are sometimes sold the cheaper grade at the higher price without knowing it.
Three checks that do work:
- Grade in writing: Ask for the grade on the quotation and invoice.
- Mill test certificate: Ask for the steel mill test certificate for the wire and pipe.
- Alloy test: For large orders, ask a lab to do a quick alloy test with a handheld analyser.
Which grade should you choose for your place?
- Commercial kitchen, bakery, food unit: SS 304. Washing, steam and food acids are hard on lower-nickel steel.
- Cold room or cold storage: SS 304. Condensation keeps the metal wet for long hours.
- Pharma, lab, hospital store: SS 304 (ask us about 316 for strong chemicals). Cleaning agents and hygiene audits demand it.
- Mushroom, microgreen and tissue culture rooms: SS 304. Constant humidity and watering.
- Dry godown, office, garage: SS 202 can be enough. Low moisture, so lower cost makes sense.
Does the grade change how much weight a shelf can hold?
Not by itself. Load depends mainly on wire thickness, shelf size, the 25 mm pipe and how evenly the weight is spread. The grade of the stainless steel generally does not affect the strength of the rack; the strength depends on the size of the wires used in the shelves.
We use 5.5/6 mm wire for the frame of the rack, 4/3.2 mm wire for the snake wire and 3.2/3 mm wire for the mesh of the shelf. So the load carrying capacity varies from 50 kg to 150 kg per shelf, depending on the wire configuration used. See all Rackwell products.
How to protect yourself when you buy
- Grade on every line: Ask the supplier to write the grade (304 or 202) next to every line on the quotation, invoice and challan.
- Mill test certificate: Ask for the mill test certificate of the wire and pipe used for your order.
- Compare like with like: Same wire thickness, same pipe thickness, same shelf count.
- Finish: Check that wire, pipe and welds are smooth and electro polished, with no rough spots or black marks.
- Lead time and remedy: Ask about lead time and what happens if the grade delivered is different from the order.
Frequently asked questions
Is SS 202 wire shelving bad?
No. It is a suitable low-cost choice for dry indoor storage. It is the wrong choice for wet, salty or food-washing areas.
Is SS 304 rust proof?
No stainless steel is rust proof. SS 304 resists rust much better than SS 202, but harsh chemicals and salt can still mark it, so wash and dry it regularly.
Do you make both grades?
Yes. Rackwell Shelving makes wire shelving in stainless steel and mild steel with electro polish finishes.
What is the delivery time?
Dispatch from the factory is in 15 to 20 days (sometimes 20 to 25 days for big orders) after advance and confirmed order. Payment terms on recent quotations are 70% advance and 30% before dispatch.
Does Rackwell hold quality certification?
Rackwell (M/S R.A. Industries) holds ISO 9001:2015 certification, which covers our quality management system; it is not a certificate for any stainless steel grade.
