SS 304 vs Powder-Coated MS Grow Racks: Which Is Better for Mushrooms and Microgreens?
| 05 Nov 2026
In short: Powder-coated mild steel (MS) grow racks cost about a third less to buy, but a chipped coating lets rust start in a damp room. Stainless steel (SS) racks cost more up front and hold up better where humidity is high and racks are washed often. Choose MS for dry, short-cycle or budget set-ups. Choose SS for mushroom rooms, tissue culture and any room you wash down.
If you are setting up a mushroom room or a microgreens shelf, the first big decision is the rack material. This guide compares SS304 and powder-coated MS grow racks on rust, cleaning, strength and cost, so you can pick the right one for your room.
What is the difference between SS304 and powder-coated MS?
Mild steel is plain steel. A powder coat is a paint layer baked on top to keep moisture away from the metal. Stainless steel carries its rust resistance inside the metal itself, so there is no outer layer to wear off. Grade 304 is the grade usually recommended for damp and washdown areas.
Which one rusts less in a humid grow room?
Stainless steel. A coating protects only while it stays whole. Wire shelves get knocked by trays, trolleys and cleaning tools, and each chip or scratch exposes bare steel. Once water reaches that steel it rusts, and rust can creep under the coating around it. Industry guides on cold-room shelving make the same point: coated wire can chip, scratch or peel, and the exposed metal then rusts, while stainless is recommended for walk-in and wet areas.
Mushroom rooms and tissue culture rooms are damp by design, and they are cleaned often. Microgreen shelves get watered every day. In all three, SS304 gives the longest trouble-free life.
Which one is easier to clean and keep hygienic?
Both are open-wire, so water drains and air moves. Stainless is easier to disinfect because there is no coating to flake into the crop. A flaking coating also gives mould and bacteria a place to settle. For tissue culture, where cleanliness is the whole job, this is the main reason to pay more.
How much more does SS cost than powder-coated MS?
From our current IndiaMART listings, the stainless version of the same 54 x 24 inch rack costs roughly 50 percent more than mild steel. Prices are per piece, before GST and freight:
- 5-shelf, 72 inch high, mushroom rack: MS Rs 7,500; SS Rs 11,500 (Rs 4,000 or 53% extra for SS)
- 6-shelf, 72 inch high, microgreen rack: MS Rs 8,999; SS Rs 13,500 (Rs 4,500 or 50% extra for SS)
- 8-shelf, 84 inch high, microgreen rack: MS Rs 11,500; SS Rs 17,500 (Rs 6,000 or 52% extra for SS)
Which one lasts longer, and does it pay back?
A cheaper rack that is replaced or repaired sooner is not always the cheaper rack. One equipment guide estimates stainless in continuous washdown at 15 to 20 years, and notes that a lower coated-steel price can turn into repair or replacement cost later. Rackwell wire shelves use 25 mm posts and 3/5/6 mm wire in either material.
Rackwell tip: If you expect to replace racks within two or three years anyway, MS is fine. If you want to set up once and not think about it, stainless wins.
Which should you choose for your crop?
- Mushroom fruiting room: SS. Constant dampness and regular washdown.
- Tissue culture lab: SS. Hygiene comes first, and there is no coating to flake or chip.
- Microgreens, indoor farm: SS, or MS if budget is tight. Shelves are watered daily; MS is ok if you wipe dry and touch up chips.
- Dry nursery, seed storage, drying room: MS. Low moisture, lower cost.
- Short-term trial or pilot: MS. Lower cost while you test the crop.
What if I choose mild steel?
You can still get good life from MS racks. Keep the room well ventilated, wipe water off after cleaning, and touch up any chipped spot straight away. Avoid dragging trays across the shelf wires.
Can I get racks in a custom size?
Yes. Most growers ask for 54 x 24 inch shelves at 72 or 84 inch height, but we make other sizes and shelf counts. Send us your room size, number of layers, the tray size you use and your crop, and we will suggest a layout. Check that the shelf count on your quote matches the number of layers you need before you order. See all Rackwell products.
Frequently asked questions
Is stainless steel always better than mild steel for grow racks?
Not always. It is better in damp or washed rooms. In a dry room, powder-coated MS can do the job at a lower price.
Do SS201 and SS304 look the same?
Yes, to the eye. That is why the grade must be written on the quote and invoice. SS304 has more nickel and resists rust better than SS201 or SS202.
How long does delivery take?
Dispatch is usually 15 to 20 days after advance and confirmed order.
Do the racks need tools to assemble?
No. Our wire shelves lock onto the posts without nuts or bolts.
